Scientists can detect tiny traces of the baby's DNA found in the mother's bloodstream. Once the DNA has been extracted, it can be compared to the DNA of the alleged father in the same way as a standard paternity test. It is now a quick, safe and relatively painless procedure that has revolutionised the testing industry.
There are a number of commercial companies that can carry out a prenatal DNA test and email you the results. To get started, you will need to have a blood sample taken by a doctor or a trained phlebotomist and send the sample to the testing lab, along with a mouth swab taken from the suspected father and all the necessary paperwork. It's not as cheap as a typical paternity test which many companies can do for around £100 - a prenatal test can cost between £700-£1000, depending on the number of potential fathers being tested and how soon you want the results.
As with any kind of DNA test, you should prepare yourself for wither result and consider the impact it would have on your relationships and family members. You should also use an accredited, government-approved lab.
